ISRO launches next-gen satellite to boost India’s indigenous GPS system
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched its NVS-03 satellite, the third in a new generation, to augment India's indigenous Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system. Deployed by the GSLV-F18 rocket, the satellite aims to enhance navigation capabilities and ensure continuity of services for the regional system.
India's NavIC system, an independent regional navigation satellite system, provides Position, Velocity, and Timing (PVT) services across India and a surrounding 1,500 km region. It offers a Standard Positioning Service for civilian users and an encrypted Restricted Service for authorized users. The NVS-03 satellite is part of ISRO's plan to augment this constellation with enhanced features.
A key enhancement in NVS-03 is the incorporation of the L1 navigation signal, which is added to the existing L5 and S signals. This expansion is intended to enhance the system's navigation capabilities, extending coverage over the Indian landmass and its defined geopolitical boundary. The satellite also carries an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured ones, components critical for maintaining precise timing in navigation services.
ISRO has planned a total of five second-generation navigation satellites, including NVS-03, to ensure the long-term continuity and improved functionality of the NavIC system. This ongoing development aims to provide reliable and accurate navigation services to a broad base of users, from civilian applications to authorized government operations, reinforcing India's independent satellite navigation infrastructure.
