Remote-Controlled Shuttle 300 km Away Headlines Gangneung ITS Congress
The 2026 Gangneung ITS World Congress brought together over 100 companies, including automakers and parts suppliers, to showcase intelligent transport systems (ITS) integrating AI and two-way communication. Lotte Innovate demonstrated remote operation of an autonomous shuttle in Daegu, 300 km from the venue, and highlighted its cooperative ITS (C-ITS) urban safety network.
The Congress focused on the evolution of ITS, particularly the shift from conventional one-way communication to cooperative ITS (C-ITS) that enables real-time information exchange between field sensors and central control facilities. This two-way system aims to enhance safety by rapidly relaying incident data to nearby vehicles, which could reduce accident risks by providing timely alerts and allowing for immediate responses.
Lotte Innovate, as a main sponsor, presented its four ITS-related business lines, with autonomous driving attracting considerable interest through a remote shuttle demonstration. The company's stated goal to triple smart mobility revenue by 2030, supported by a transition from demonstration projects to full-scale business, suggests a strategic move towards commercializing its ITS technologies, with potential expansion into overseas markets.
Korean small and venture companies also showcased innovations in ITS-based safety management. Bitsensing introduced a radar sensor that prompts nearby vehicles to slow down, while UT Information demonstrated MDMS, a public safety management software using vision AI to detect incidents like fires or traffic accidents via smartphone cameras. These specific applications illustrate varied approaches to leveraging AI for transport safety.
