OpenAI To Introduce Visual Ads In ChatGPT Image Generation
OpenAI plans to introduce visual advertisements alongside images generated by its ChatGPT chatbot. The new ad format will be tested in the U.S. later this month for users on its Free and Go plans, featuring a limited group of advertisers. OpenAI states these ads will be clearly labeled, separate from generated images, and will not influence ChatGPT's responses.
This expansion into visual advertising for ChatGPT's image generation capabilities reflects OpenAI's ongoing efforts to monetize its platform. By targeting its reported 1.2 billion weekly users, the company aims to provide advertisers with a new channel to showcase products visually, potentially broadening its revenue streams beyond existing subscription models.
OpenAI is also enhancing its advertising infrastructure through new measurement tools and partnerships. Integrations with platforms like Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, alongside attribution partners such as AppsFlyer and Adjust, suggest a move towards more sophisticated ad campaign management and performance tracking. This could offer advertisers greater clarity on their return on investment.
The company is addressing brand suitability and user privacy concerns by working with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. These partnerships are designed to help advertisers understand where their ads appear and to keep advertising away from sensitive or unsuitable conversations while protecting user privacy. The effectiveness of these safeguards will be crucial for maintaining user trust and advertiser confidence.
The introduction of visual ads follows the earlier rollout of ads for Free and low-cost ChatGPT plans, which included India. This suggests a methodical approach to integrating advertising across its user base, indicating a potential expansion to other markets after initial testing and refinement.
