OpenAI Engineer Accused of Secretly Recording Executives Was in Contact With Saudi Royal, Days Before Arrest
An OpenAI engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, was in frequent contact with a member of the Saudi Royal Family regarding a Saudi AI initiative, according to prosecutors. This communication occurred as Alfozan allegedly installed a secret recording device in an OpenAI executive conference room, as reported by International Business Times.
Prosecutors allege that Abdulrahman Alfozan, an OpenAI engineer, communicated consistently with an unidentified Saudi royal family member who sought to recruit him for a Saudi artificial intelligence initiative. These exchanges reportedly spanned 2025 and 2026, including a message in May 2026 where the royal stated, "Saudi needs you more then [sic] the US!" to which Alfozan responded "100,".
The communications continued until four days before Alfozan's arrest on October 9. Prosecutors noted Alfozan's alleged reluctance to leave OpenAI until his stock vested. While Alfozan was also a venture partner at Saudi venture capital firm Raed Ventures, and Prince Khalid bin Bader Al Saud joined the firm in 2025, prosecutors did not link the prince or Raed Ventures to the royal who communicated with Alfozan.
This alleged contact with a Saudi royal coincides with accusations that Alfozan installed a recording device in an OpenAI executive conference room. The device, discovered on September 30, was allegedly concealed in a USB port and intended to capture highly confidential information about OpenAI's technology, product plans, and strategic decisions. Prosecutors also cited Alfozan's alleged inquiries about OpenAI's internal layouts and a chatbot's prompts concerning audio-recording device construction and concealment, suggesting premeditation.
