Nscale’s IPO will test Wall Street’s appetite for concentrated AI bets once again
British neocloud Nscale is preparing for an IPO on the NYSE, aiming for a $35 billion valuation and seeking to raise $3 billion. The company has amassed over $103 billion in contracts since spinning out of Arkon Energy two years ago. However, 85% of this revenue is tied to two major customers: Microsoft and Anthropic. Nscale reported $140.6 million in revenue for the first half of the year, up from $10.4 million a year prior, but net losses also jumped to $1.02 billion.
Nscale’s IPO will test Wall Street’s tolerance for extreme customer concentration. The company depends on Microsoft and Anthropic for 85% of its $103 billion in contracts. Anthropic’s $44.6 billion agreement is contingent on Nscale securing financing and meeting "stringent" milestones. This structure introduces significant risk for public investors, despite the large contract values.
Asia’s nascent AI infrastructure providers should watch Nscale’s reception closely. Many regional players also rely on a few anchor clients, similar to CoreWeave with Microsoft and Applied Digital with Oracle. The market’s reaction will show if this model is sustainable for public listings. This IPO sets a precedent for how concentrated revenue streams are valued.
The key thing to watch is Nscale’s ability to diversify its customer base post-IPO. If Nscale fails to secure the financing needed for the Anthropic deal, it could lose $44.6 billion in revenue. This would severely impact its $35 billion valuation. Investors will demand clarity on future customer acquisition beyond the current tech giants.
