Mubadala is backing Luckin Coffee. Could the Middle East be next?
Abu Dhabi sovereign investor Mubadala has committed a USD 1 billion minority investment in Luckin Coffee. This deal, announced September 10, brings a new institutional backer to the Chinese coffee chain. Mubadala will invest alongside Centurium Capital, Luckin’s controlling shareholder. Luckin reported RMB 15.9 billion (USD 2.4 billion) in revenue for Q2 2026, up 28.5% year-on-year. The investment reflects Mubadala’s confidence in China’s consumer sector and Luckin’s international growth prospects.
Luckin's Q2 2026 results show rapid network expansion, with 2,714 new stores added, mostly in China. However, same-store sales at self-operated locations fell 5.3% year-on-year. This indicates Luckin's growth relies heavily on new store openings, not just increased traffic at existing ones. The operating margin also slipped to 13.4% from 14.1% despite higher operating income.
Mubadala's USD 1 billion investment provides significant capital and a global network for Luckin's international ambitions. Luckin currently operates in Singapore, Malaysia, and the US, with 63 self-operated stores in Singapore and 24 partnership stores in Malaysia by Q2 2025. This deal could revive Luckin's earlier, unsuccessful attempt to enter the Middle East, a region where Mubadala has deep ties.
The test for Luckin is whether its technology-enabled model can drive profitable growth in new markets without the aggressive expansion tactics seen in China. Its cautious US approach, testing brand positioning and product localization, suggests a more measured international strategy. Watch for any specific Middle East expansion announcements, as none are currently confirmed.
