Modulate raises $25M for its voice models and analysis suite
Boston-based voice intelligence startup Modulate has raised $25 million in new funding. The company uses small models for transcription, emotional analysis, deepfake detection, and policy enforcement for voice agents. Future Ventures led the round, with participation from Hyperplane and Lakestar. Modulate previously raised $41 million at a $170 million valuation, according to PitchBook data. The company has 40-45 employees and plans to add 10 more.
Modulate’s $25 million funding round points to a shift in voice AI. The focus is no longer just on making AI voices sound human. Instead, Modulate detects deepfakes and analyzes intent behind human speech, a more complex task. Its use of over 100 small models avoids the need for specialized hardware, a key advantage as token costs rise.
This approach has direct implications for Asia’s call centers and customer service operations. Companies like India’s Tata Consultancy Services or China’s Alibaba Cloud, which manage vast customer interactions, face increasing deepfake threats. Modulate’s tech offers a new layer of security and compliance, potentially reducing fraud and improving call quality analysis in these large markets.
The thing to watch is Modulate’s ability to scale its on-premises and on-device deployment capabilities. Increased privacy and reduced latency are critical for enterprise adoption in regulated Asian markets. If Modulate can deliver this, its value proposition for regional banks and financial services will significantly increase.
