MediaTek releases Dimensity 9600 Pro mobile chip
MediaTek unveiled its Dimensity 9600 Pro and 9600M smartphone chips. The 9600 Pro uses TSMC's 2-nanometer process and includes a dedicated neural processing unit. This NPU offers a 51 percent improvement in processing generative AI prompts. The 9600M uses TSMC's 3nm process. Both chips target the premium handset market.
MediaTek's new Dimensity 9600 Pro chip is not just another mobile processor. It represents a direct challenge to Qualcomm in the premium phone segment. The 9600 Pro features a dedicated NPU for on-device generative AI. This moves AI processing from the cloud to the device. It targets higher margins in a competitive market.
This launch matters for TSMC and its Asian customers. TSMC's foundry market share already rose to 72.5 percent last quarter. Demand for advanced chips pushed some TSMC lines to full utilization. MediaTek supplies chips to Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo. These Chinese smartphone makers will benefit from the new AI capabilities.
The real test for MediaTek is market share expansion. The company's corporate senior vice president, J.C. Hsu, sees room to increase their flagship segment share. MediaTek's market value surpassed Qualcomm earlier this year. Its US$3.9 billion convertible bond sale, with Nvidia investing US$3.5 billion, shows confidence. Watch whether MediaTek can sustain this momentum against Qualcomm's established premium presence.
