Matiks raises $10M to expand its math and puzzle gaming platform

India-based gaming company Matiks has secured $10 million in pre-Series A funding, led by General Catalyst, to expand its platform for math, logic, and brain-game puzzles. The company, which reported growth from 22,000 to over 300,000 daily users this year, states its aim is to offer an alternative to what it calls "AI-riddled timelines."

Matiks' recent $10 million funding round indicates investor confidence in its strategy to differentiate within the mobile gaming market. Co-founder Sudhanshu Bhatia positions the company's math, logic, and puzzle games as intellectually engaging entertainment, contrasting them with what he terms "brain slop" and a perceived deluge of "AI content" across platforms. This narrative frames their offering as a distinct choice for users seeking focused mental challenges.

The investment decision appears to be primarily supported by Matiks' reported user engagement and growth figures. The startup stated a significant increase in daily users from 22,000 earlier in the year to over 300,000 by September, alongside 2.2 million monthly active users in the same month. Rahul Humayun, a partner at General Catalyst, cited the "product’s pace of iteration and user engagement" and "exceptional product love and power user behaviour" as key factors, suggesting these metrics were central to the investment.

While Matiks aims to provide an alternative to "AI-riddled timelines," it is also integrating AI into its offerings. The company has debuted an experimental game-creation platform called Jelo, which allows users to make their own games with AI assistance. This dual approach, emphasizing human-centric puzzles while also leveraging AI for creative tools, suggests a strategy to capitalize on both perceived market gaps and technological advancements for scalability, particularly as it plans expansion into markets like South Korea and Japan.
