Links To Saudi Royal Family, Plans To Leave US: What Filing Against Ex-Openai Engineer Who Planted Device Revealed
A former OpenAI engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, was arrested on October 9, accused of planting a recording device in an executive conference room. Prosecutors allege he used AI tools to develop encrypted devices and locate meeting rooms. Court filings also revealed his communications with a Saudi royal family member regarding a recruitment effort for an AI initiative in Saudi Arabia.
The allegations against Abdulrahman Alfozan, a US green card holder, include installing a "surreptitious audio recording device" in an OpenAI executive conference room. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Alfozan near the room multiple times before the device was found on September 28 and retrieved on October 5. This suggests a deliberate and planned operation, rather than an opportunistic act, given the reported use of AI tools to aid in device development and room identification.
Prosecutors argued Alfozan posed a "danger to the national security of the United States" due to the nature of the allegations and his connections to the Saudi government. His bail request was denied, with the court citing flight risk, particularly as he was scheduled to leave the US on a one-way flight to Riyadh and his wife and son had already departed for Saudi Arabia on tickets bought by a Saudi military official. The court's assessment of flight risk reflects the perceived seriousness of the situation from US authorities.
The reported WhatsApp exchanges with an unnamed Saudi royal family member, urging Alfozan to return for an AI initiative, introduce a dimension of potential state-sponsored interest. While Alfozan reportedly agreed to return after his stock vested, his arrest occurred just before his planned departure. This sequence of events, as presented in the court filings, suggests a convergence of personal ambition and external recruitment efforts amidst the alleged security breach at a prominent AI firm.
