Korean NPU Makers Urge Large-Scale Commercial References for Exports
South Korean NPU startups Rebellions, FuriosaAI, and DeepX are urging the government to expand large-scale domestic commercial deployments of their chips. Executives from these companies, including Rebellions CEO Park Sung-hyun, emphasized at a National Assembly forum that broader real-world application is crucial for securing overseas orders. They contend that while technical performance is globally competitive, a lack of substantial commercial references at home hinders export success. The companies also highlighted the need for price competitiveness and robust after-sales support to compete with rivals from China and other nations. This push seeks policy support to foster a virtuous cycle where domestic projects lead to global contracts.
Korean NPU makers are pushing for more substantial domestic commercial deployments, arguing that large-scale references are essential for winning international contracts. Rebellions CEO Park Sung-hyun noted that current government-supported testing opportunities are insufficient in volume, stressing the need for projects that generate actual service revenue rather than just small proofs-of-concept. This reflects a broader challenge for emerging hardware players: proving their technology's reliability and scalability in real-world, high-volume environments. DeepX executive director Cho Jae-hong added that price competitiveness and strong after-sales support are critical to overcome the hesitation of overseas buyers, particularly when competing with established Chinese and other foreign vendors. The call for government voucher support during the export process and funding for immediate technical support systems at overseas sites points to the high barriers to entry for Korean startups trying to penetrate global markets. The success of next-generation chips like Rebellions' Rebel100, which aims for performance comparable to Nvidia's H200, will depend heavily on securing these large-scale domestic deployments by year-end.
