Korean Animation Group Expands AI Ties With China at Shanghai Summit
The Korea Animation Industry Association co-hosted the 2026 Yangtze River Delta Animation Industry Summit in Shanghai, launching a Korea-China AIGC Creative Contest. The October 22 event, which included Chinese partners and platforms like ByteDance and iQIYI, aimed to explore AI technology in animation production and foster cross-border content collaboration and IP development, according to reporting by Seoul Economic Daily.
The official launch of the Korea-China AIGC Creative Contest provides a concrete mechanism for AI-driven content development. Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) refers to content produced with substantial AI assistance. The contest is specifically designed to build capabilities in AI-based content production and to identify joint projects between creators, moving beyond general discussions to establish a framework for future animation collaboration.
Beyond the contest, the summit focused on practical avenues for cooperation. Roundtable and business networking sessions directly addressed co-production, IP licensing, investment, and distribution. Discussions also covered AI video production technology and strategies for linking content distribution through over-the-top (OTT) services, indicating a dual focus on both content creation methods and market access.
This initiative seeks to combine Korean animation's original planning and adaptability with China's market scale and industrial infrastructure. As Cho Kyung-hoon, chairman of the Korea Animation Industry Association, stated, the objective is for the two countries to progress beyond simple exchanges and become "practical partners that tackle the global market together."
