JCB Plans Contactless Payments on Hanoi Metro in Early 2027
JCB International has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hanoi Metro to introduce JCB contactless fare payments on the city’s urban railway network. The service, named JCB transit, aims to launch in early 2027, allowing JCB cardholders to tap their cards or compatible devices directly at metro gates.
The planned JCB transit service in Hanoi is designed to simplify metro travel for cardholders by enabling direct tap-and-go payments at fare gates. This eliminates the need for purchasing separate tickets or carrying cash, streamlining the entry process for commuters and visitors alike. The service is targeted to be operational by early 2027.
JCB explicitly stated that this service is intended to particularly benefit international visitors from markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The company suggests that offering a familiar payment method will enhance convenience for these travelers using Hanoi’s metro network.
Beyond the immediate user convenience, the collaboration forms part of JCB's efforts to expand contactless payment options across public transport networks. Takumi Takahashi, Executive Vice President of JCB International, emphasized that the initiative is expected to contribute to the development of a modern, cashless public transportation environment within Vietnam.
This move follows JCB's expansion of contactless transit payments to other major metro networks, including Taipei Metro earlier this year, as well as Metro de Madrid and LA Metro. Hanoi Metro itself commenced operations for its first line, Line 2A, in November 2021.
