Influencers urge Ethiopia to begin Eritrea invasion
Ethiopian online influencers are using social media and AI-generated content to advocate for a government invasion of Eritrea to secure sea access, following recent military advances. Key figures like Jawar Mohammed, with millions of followers, are rallying public support for military action, while the Ethiopian Prime Minister has previously stated securing a Red Sea base is a national objective.
Prominent Ethiopian online activists are leveraging social media platforms and artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images to push for military action against Eritrea. These campaigns, led by figures such as Jawar Mohammed and Eliyas Kebede, utilize AI to create visuals like supporters in military uniforms or altered maps, aiming to boost morale among Ethiopian army supporters and galvanize public sentiment.
The use of AI in this context serves primarily as a tool for public mobilization rather than direct strategic influence. While influencers like Eliyas Kebede note their AI content has been "somewhat successful in boosting the morale of Ethiopian army supporters," a Horn of Africa specialist, Kjetil Tronvoll, states that such online campaigns are unlikely to "sway the government’s decision on whether to invade."
Instead of influencing direct government policy, the online efforts, including those backed by AI-generated content, appear to be more effective in rallying the diaspora and local communities around the objective of regime change in Eritrea. This distinction suggests that while digital tools can shape public opinion and support for a cause, their direct impact on high-level military and policy decisions remains limited, according to reported expert analysis.
