Xreal Aura is a new wired headset powered by Android XR

Google's smart glasses partner Xreal launched its new Aura wired smart glasses at the Android Dev Summit. Powered by Android XR and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite platforms, the device is available to order starting today in the United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea, with prices starting at a limited launch rate of $1,099.

The Xreal Aura smart glasses operate as a tethered device, relying on a separate smartphone-like unit for processing power, rather than handling all computing internally. This design choice means the glasses themselves weigh 95 grams, which is heavier than Meta's 69-gram smart glasses, and requires users to carry the external processing unit, or "puck."

For visual content, the Aura integrates Sony's Micro-OLED display, offering 1200p resolution at 120 Hz with a 95-degree field of view. These specifications, Xreal states, position the display above the Ray-Ban Meta Display. The device supports various Google Play apps and games, alongside specific XR experiences, and can connect to computers or gaming consoles via USB-C to function as an augmented display.

A key element of the Aura's user experience is the integration of Gemini, available as a Q&A assistant to help users understand on-screen context, leveraging the Android XR platform. This launch aligns with Google's strategy to work with device manufacturers like Xreal and Samsung to introduce Android XR devices to the market, mirroring its approach in the smartphone sector.
