India’s Airbound bags $37M to take on trucks with rocket-like drones
Indian startup Airbound has secured $37 million in Series A funding, bringing its total capital raised to nearly $50 million. The round was led by Greenoaks, with participation from DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures. Airbound specializes in autonomous drones designed to transport goods at costs competitive with road trucking. The company aims to build ultra-lightweight vertical-flight drones, with its current TRT model weighing 3.3 pounds and carrying 2.2 pounds of payload. Airbound has completed over 13,000 autonomous flights in southern India, including transporting diagnostic samples for Narayana Health.
Airbound's $37 million Series A round, bringing its total funding to nearly $50 million, underscores a significant bet on drone logistics in India. The company's focus on building drones lighter than their payload, like the 3.3-pound TRT carrying 2.2 pounds, directly addresses the high energy cost of conventional aircraft. This design approach is critical for making drone delivery economically viable against road transport, a key hurdle for broader adoption in dense markets like India. The partnership with Narayana Health, where drones cut diagnostic sample transport from hours to minutes, demonstrates a clear value proposition in healthcare logistics. The real story here is Airbound's ambition to become the 'Boeing' of drone logistics, supplying aircraft to other delivery networks rather than solely operating its own. This strategy could accelerate drone adoption across India by providing a standardized, cost-effective platform for various industries, from e-commerce to healthcare. The agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government to develop a drone delivery network targeting 10,000 flights daily points to a future where regulatory frameworks evolve to support large-scale aerial logistics, a critical development for the entire region.
