Huawei’s new smartphone sub-brand could follow Honor’s old strategy

Huawei is reportedly preparing to launch a new smartphone sub-brand, Starlight (Xingmang), to compete in the online mid-range market. According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the brand will offer cost-effective phones, primarily online, with several models already in development. These devices are rumored to feature Huawei's Kirin 8-series or 9-series chips.

This potential move suggests Huawei is aiming to fill a gap in its current smartphone portfolio. While its Mate and Pura series target premium users, Nova focuses on design and imaging, and Enjoy offers the most affordable options, the company currently lacks a dedicated online mid-range line. Starlight would position Huawei to directly challenge rivals like Redmi, iQOO, and Realme, as well as its former sub-brand, Honor, which originally operated in a similar segment.

Introducing an affordable online-focused line could serve multiple strategic objectives for Huawei. It would provide another avenue for the company to integrate its in-house Kirin chips into a broader range of devices, potentially helping to lower overall production costs through scale. Furthermore, by expanding its reach into the cost-effective segment, Huawei could significantly increase the user base for its HarmonyOS operating system.

A larger HarmonyOS user base could, in turn, make the platform more attractive to developers, fostering a more robust native app ecosystem. The article notes that HarmonyOS 6 and 7 already have over 90 million users and rank as the world's third-largest operating system. The success of Starlight in growing this base will depend on factors like pricing, market availability, and consumer reception, which remain to be seen.
