Hsiao Bi-khim hails Taiwan-made robot dog and innovation
Taiwanese Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim yesterday praised a domestically produced robotic dog, "Taiwan Tu Gou," during a visit to the Taichung Smart and Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Show. The robot, a collaboration between Parkson Wu Industrial Co and Jia Chen Electronic Co, is reported to be fully Taiwanese in its development, components, manufacturing, and assembly, and is aimed at security, transport, and military uses.
The introduction of "Taiwan Tu Gou" reflects Taiwan's policy priority of integrating traditional manufacturing with emerging AI sectors to bolster its national defense industrial base. Vice President Hsiao emphasized the importance of such dual-use innovation, signaling a governmental push to apply technological advancements from precision manufacturing and AI to both military and civilian applications.
The robot dog's reported technical specifications point to a design focused on operational utility. With a 30kg load-bearing capacity, a powerful joint torque of 250 Newton-meters, and the ability to navigate complex terrain, it is presented as capable of performing demanding tasks. Its compact design, achieved through a planetary speed reducer and an integrated engine and motor driver board module, suggests an emphasis on efficiency and maneuverability in varied environments.
The claim that the robot's entire process, from research and development to assembly, is domestically sourced suggests an effort to cultivate self-reliance in advanced robotics. This focus on internal capabilities, along with a stated competitive price point, indicates a strategic approach to developing practical, locally-made solutions for defense and security needs, rather than relying on external or purely demonstrative technologies.
