Hong Kong remains most international city in Asia, widening lead over Singapore
Hong Kong has increased its lead over Singapore as Asia's most international city, according to the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce's annual Asian Cities Internationality Index. The city scored 74.6 out of 100 points across seven key areas, widening its lead over Singapore to two points from 0.2 last year. Hong Kong maintained its first-place ranking in business and economy, and improved from fourth to third in innovation and ideas. However, the study noted that Hong Kong still lags behind rivals in attracting technology investment, despite gains in other areas.
Hong Kong's continued lead as Asia's most international city, as measured by the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, points to its enduring strengths in business, connectivity, and talent diversity. The city's rise in innovation and ideas, moving from fourth to third place, suggests a growing capacity for research and attracting global professionals through talent schemes. This is a positive for the region's overall tech ecosystem, providing a strong base for collaboration and talent exchange. Jacob Kam Chak-pui, the Chamber chairman, specifically cited university research and talent admission schemes as drivers for this improvement. However, the persistent lag in technology investment is a critical area for Hong Kong to address. While it excels in attracting talent and fostering innovation, converting these into substantial tech sector funding remains a challenge. For AI and tech professionals in Asia, this indicates that while Hong Kong offers a robust environment for foundational work and talent, other regional hubs may still be more attractive for significant capital deployment in new technology ventures. The two-point lead over Singapore, while an improvement, still leaves room for competitive pressure in the long term.
