Hong Kong Bank Customers Turn to AI for Financial Planning

More than 60 percent of Hong Kong bank customers use AI regularly, according to the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB). Half of those surveyed use AI for financial planning. The Annual Banking Customers Survey covered 400 local customers. It also found strong demand for human oversight and data protection. The findings were presented at HKIB's Annual Banking Conference 2026.

    Nexa's Summary

Hong Kong banks face a clear tension. Customers embrace AI, with 60 percent using it regularly and half for financial planning. Yet, 48 percent demand human review. Another 44 percent prioritize data protection. This shows a market ready for digital tools but unwilling to fully trust machines with their money. Banks must balance automation with robust human safeguards.

This creates a challenge for Hong Kong's financial sector. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) emphasizes accountability and trust. Banks like HSBC and Standard Chartered are already discussing AI integration. The test for these institutions is not just deploying AI, but building systems that integrate human oversight seamlessly. This will differentiate successful digital transformation from mere tech adoption.

The thing to watch is how Hong Kong banks address the demand for human review. If banks can effectively integrate human touchpoints into AI-driven services, they will gain a competitive edge. This will also strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international financial center. The outcome will shape customer engagement models through 2030.
