Google signs its biggest rice-methane carbon credit deal with Indian startup Mitti Labs
Google has committed to purchasing 1 million carbon credits from Indian climate-tech startup Mitti Labs by 2030. This four-year agreement is reportedly the largest publicly announced deal for credits generated from reducing methane emissions in rice farming. The project will span rice farms across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, covering approximately 100,000 hectares at its peak. Mitti Labs uses a GeoAI platform combining satellite imagery and field measurements to monitor crop growth and soil moisture, helping farmers adopt practices that cut methane emissions by about 50% and water use by 40% without yield loss. The deal helps Google address its net-zero emissions goal by 2030, following an 18% increase in its greenhouse gas emissions in 2022.
This Google-Mitti Labs deal is less about Google's carbon footprint and more about validating a specific climate-tech approach for Asia. Mitti Labs' GeoAI platform, which uses satellite radar imagery and field data to track rice farming practices, now has a significant corporate endorsement. This could accelerate the adoption of similar AI-driven agricultural solutions across India and Southeast Asia, where rice cultivation is widespread and methane emissions are a major concern. The key takeaway for Asia is not just the 1 million carbon credits, but the potential for Mitti Labs to scale its operations beyond India. The startup plans to enter the Philippines later this year, followed by Indonesia and other Southeast Asian markets by 2027. This expansion, backed by Google's due diligence, could set a precedent for how large corporations engage with climate-tech startups in the region, particularly those focused on agricultural emissions. The challenge will be replicating its success across diverse farming communities and regulatory environments.
