Gigaphoton Begins Evaluation of L300KZ Excimer Laser for Pulsed Laser Deposition for Advanced Materials Applications
Gigaphoton Inc. has installed its L300KZ KrF excimer laser at a Japanese manufacturer of high-temperature superconducting wire. The installation, which occurred on September 25, 2026, initiates an evaluation phase for volume manufacturing of these wires, developed under Japan’s Moonshot Research and Development Program.
This development marks a step in applying excimer laser technology, traditionally used in semiconductor lithography, to advanced materials. Gigaphoton is leveraging its established expertise to develop lasers for pulsed laser deposition (PLD), a process critical for forming high-quality thin films. The L300KZ laser is specifically designed to support the mass production of rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) wire, a component for superconducting magnets used in fusion reactors.
The current phase involves evaluating the laser in an actual PLD thin-film deposition environment. This means the project will now focus on understanding how laser operating conditions influence the deposition process. The goal is to refine manufacturing techniques, improve the quality of superconducting wire, and establish methods for high-volume production.
While the immediate focus is on high-temperature superconducting wire for fusion reactors, Gigaphoton also anticipates broader applications for its PLD technology. The company sees potential in various advanced materials fields, including functional thin films, advanced electronic materials, and optical materials. This suggests a strategic expansion beyond its core semiconductor lithography business into a wider array of industrial applications for its laser technology.
