Former TikTok execs built an app that uses AI to teach you how to pose for a photo
Former TikTok employees Melody Chu and Jing Liu launched Superpose, an iOS camera app that uses AI to generate four potential poses for users. The app, which launched in July, has seen over 22,000 downloads and 190,000 pose generations. Superpose offers five free daily generations, with additional packs available for purchase. The company raised $2.2 million in funding from investors including Khosla Ventures and Chinese selfie app maker Meitu.
Superpose's focus on real-life portrait photography, rather than AI-generated backgrounds, sets it apart from many generative AI apps. Its direct competition includes Google's Camera Coach and Adobe's experimental camera app, both focused on AI-guided photography. The app's monetization strategy, selling pose generations, reflects a common approach for consumer AI tools.
The investment from Chinese smartphone and selfie app maker Meitu is notable. Meitu's participation points to a potential strategic interest in integrating Superpose's AI posing technology into its own suite of popular beauty and photo editing applications across Asia. This could give Superpose a significant distribution channel in key Asian markets.
The thing to watch is Superpose's ability to improve its 'uncanny' pose suggestions and personalization. If it can refine its AI to consistently deliver natural and desirable poses, user retention and paid generations will increase. The test for Superpose is whether it can move beyond a novelty app to a daily utility for its 22,000 users.
