DeepSeek offers compensation after restoring from service outage
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, restored its application programming interface (API) and Chat Service at 1:04 p.m. Beijing Time on Thursday, following an outage that began in the morning. The company stated that three components were affected and announced it would offer credit refunds for usage between October 8 and 14 as compensation.
The service disruption highlights the operational challenges for AI companies, particularly those offering API services that power third-party applications. DeepSeek's outage, affecting its V4 Pro API, V4.1 Flash API, and Chat Service, led to "DeepSeek down" trending on Weibo, indicating immediate user impact and reliance on its infrastructure.
DeepSeek's response included an apology, a comprehensive investigation, and a commitment to eliminate single points of dependency. The offer of credit refunds for a week's worth of consumption is a practical step to mitigate customer dissatisfaction, acknowledging the direct financial impact on users and developers reliant on their services.
The company's status page showed eight incidents in September and two additional incidents between August and October. While the root cause of this latest outage was not disclosed, this pattern suggests that maintaining consistent uptime for complex AI systems, especially those integrated into critical workflows, presents an ongoing stability challenge for DeepSeek.
