Hong Kong investors most eager in Asia to beat markets – but temper return hopes: report
Hong Kong investors exhibit the highest ambition in Asia to outperform the market, with 95% expressing this goal, compared to an 85% regional average. Despite this, they hold more tempered return expectations, anticipating 12.3% above inflation long-term, while the regional average stands at 17.3%, according to an August survey by Natixis Investment Managers.
The Natixis survey establishes a distinction in investor sentiment within Asia. While the broader region's return expectations have been lifted by what the report describes as "AI-fuelled optimism" and an 18-month market rally, Hong Kong investors appear to be taking a more measured view. This suggests that the enthusiasm surrounding AI may not be uniformly translating into higher return forecasts across all Asian markets.
Hong Kong investors' high ambition to outperform the market, coupled with their lower return expectations compared to regional peers, indicates a potentially more strategic and risk-aware approach. Their outlook may reflect a different assessment of the sustainability of current market rallies or a greater emphasis on realistic, inflation-adjusted returns, even amidst a generally optimistic tech investment climate.
This contrast highlights that while AI is a significant driver of market sentiment across Asia, its influence on concrete investment expectations can vary. The Hong Kong data suggests a segment of investors prioritizing a disciplined outlook over the elevated projections seen in other parts of the region, which could be useful context for understanding diverse investment behaviors in Asia.
