China’s PLA sets up new military academy colleges for AI, drones and discipline
China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) has established new institutions at military academies focused on artificial intelligence, drones, and discipline inspection. These include the College of Unmanned and Intelligent Engineering within the PLA Army Engineering University and the College of Discipline Inspection, Law and Politics at the National Defence University, aligning with the PLA's centennial modernization goals.
The establishment of these new colleges reflects a dual focus within the PLA's modernization efforts: advancing high-tech capabilities and strengthening internal oversight. By creating specialized institutions for unmanned and intelligent engineering, the PLA is directly investing in the development of AI and drone technologies, which are increasingly central to modern military strategy. This move aims to build a dedicated technical workforce capable of developing and integrating these advanced systems.
Concurrently, the inauguration of the College of Discipline Inspection, Law and Politics indicates an intent to reinforce anti-corruption measures and adherence to regulations within the military. This suggests an understanding that technological advancement alone is insufficient for modernization; it must be coupled with robust internal governance and accountability. The new colleges for Combat Support NCOs and Equipment Support NCOs further suggest an effort to professionalize technical and logistical roles.
The simultaneous emphasis on both technological specialization and internal discipline suggests a coordinated strategy. The PLA appears to be addressing potential vulnerabilities that could arise from rapid technological integration without corresponding attention to ethical frameworks, legal compliance, and internal integrity. This integrated approach aims to ensure that the development of advanced capabilities is supported by a stable and accountable organizational structure.
