China’s CXMT touts new chip manufacturing platform as close to ‘world’s most advanced’
Chinese memory chip maker Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced its fifth-generation G5 technology platform has entered mass production. The company claims this narrows the gap with global leaders like Samsung and SK Hynix. CXMT’s G5 platform uses 11.95nm process technology and increases dies produced per wafer by at least 50 percent. The firm also showcased two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X DRAM chips, a 50 percent capacity increase over previous generations.
CXMT's claim of 11.95nm process technology, close to the 10nm used by global leaders, is a significant technical leap for China. The "quadruple exposure" method suggests an innovative approach to overcome equipment restrictions. This development reflects China's determined push for semiconductor self-sufficiency, bypassing reliance on advanced lithography tools.
CXMT's progress directly challenges South Korean giants Samsung and SK Hynix in the crucial DRAM market. While CXMT still trails in absolute node advancement, a 50 percent increase in storage density per wafer changes cost dynamics. This could put pricing pressure on competitors in the mobile DRAM segment, particularly within the Asia market.
The test for CXMT is market adoption and sustained yield rates at scale. Its ability to consistently produce high-quality 24-gigabit LPDDR5X chips will determine its impact on the global supply chain. This is a real threat to the established order, not just a symbolic win.
