China's car exports stay strong in August but domestic sales decline further

China's passenger vehicle exports surged 77.5% year-on-year in August, reaching 894,000 units, according to the China Passenger Car Association. This growth was driven by intensified overseas expansion from automakers like BYD and Geely Auto, both of which achieved fresh export records. Domestically, however, sales declined 23.7% to 1.55 million vehicles, worsening from July's drop. Even electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid sales, which comprised 64.7% of domestic sales, saw a 10.1% year-on-year contraction in China, while their exports accelerated by 154.7%. Xiaomi is also preparing for a European launch next year, signing agreements with German auto dealers.

    Nexa's Summary

The real story in China's auto market is the stark divergence between robust exports and weakening domestic demand. While passenger vehicle exports jumped 77.5% in August, domestic sales fell 23.7%, a worsening trend. This reflects a strategic pivot by Chinese automakers, including BYD and Geely Auto, to overseas markets where they are gaining traction with competitively priced, technology-rich models. The export boom is critical for growth, especially as domestic EV sales also declined by 10.1% in August. This aggressive export push, however, carries risks. Chinese regulators have already issued guidelines warning against frequent price cuts and non-compliant practices overseas, a move that suggests concerns about the domestic price war spilling into international markets. For companies like Seres, whose sales plunged 44% last month due to late overseas expansion, the cost of lagging in the export race is clear. The ability of Chinese automakers to navigate these regulatory concerns while maintaining their export momentum will be key to their sustained growth in Asia and beyond.
