China’s BYD, SAIC Motor eye EVs with all-solid-state batteries in 2027
Chinese battery and automotive manufacturers BYD and SAIC Motor are targeting 2027 for the launch of electric vehicles equipped with all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). These next-generation batteries promise enhanced safety by eliminating thermal runaway risks and offer significantly higher energy density, potentially enabling driving ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers. SAIC, in collaboration with Qingtao (Kunshan) Energy Development Group, has already assembled a prototype EV with an ASSB, while BYD, a long-time battery developer, is also aiming for large-scale ASSB production by 2030. The ASSB market is projected for substantial growth, with Chinese firms actively developing semi-solid-state batteries as an interim step. This aggressive push highlights China's ambition to lead in advanced EV battery technology.
This development underscores China's strategic dominance and rapid innovation in the global EV battery market. The aggressive pursuit of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) by major players like BYD and SAIC, alongside the interim adoption of semi-solid-state batteries, showcases a pragmatic approach to technological advancement.
