China overtakes US as top workplace for elite AI researchers, study finds

China's talent retention is only part of the story; the country is actively attracting top AI researchers. The country's share of leading AI researchers jumped from 27 percent in 2022 to 41 percent last year. This rapid gain points to a deliberate strategy to build a self-sufficient AI ecosystem, reducing reliance on global talent flows that once favored Silicon Valley.

For Asia, this concentration of talent in China means a stronger competitive landscape for AI development. Companies like Baidu and Alibaba will benefit directly from a deeper domestic talent pool.
