China approves Alibaba AI models for use in iPhone Duo and other Apple handsets
China has approved Alibaba Group Holding's artificial intelligence models for integration into several Apple handsets, including the new iPhone Duo, for the Chinese market. This regulatory clearance removes a hurdle for the introduction of Apple Intelligence in the country, according to updated network access permits from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The regulatory approval specifically includes Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen and Tongyi Wanxiang AI systems alongside Apple Intelligence in the network access permits for the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and other Apple models. This arrangement satisfies a local requirement, allowing Apple to launch its AI features in China after previous delays.
The integration of Alibaba's models, rather than Apple's own AI, indicates a strategy for regulatory compliance. Tongyi Qianwen is a large language model, while Tongyi Wanxiang focuses on text-to-image and video generation. This suggests that the functionalities of Apple Intelligence in China will rely on these specific Alibaba capabilities.
This development provides a clear path for Apple to introduce its AI services to the Chinese market. The reliance on Alibaba's AI technologies for core functions means the user experience for Apple Intelligence in China will differ from implementations in other regions, where Apple might use its proprietary AI.
