Cebu eyes AI research center with Chinese, Korean firms
Cebu is exploring the establishment of an artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) center focused on AI security, a consultant to the Cebu Provincial Government reported. The initiative involves three startup companies from Cebu, China, and South Korea, which are collaborating to leverage their technologies. An announcement on the specific companies is expected soon.
The proposed AI R&D center in Cebu is specifically designed to focus on AI security, addressing concerns about the safety and reliability of AI platforms used for research and decision support. This specialized focus suggests a deliberate strategy to develop expertise in a critical, rather than general, area of AI, which could differentiate Cebu's offering in the broader technology landscape.
Cebu's provincial government actively promotes the region for technology ventures, highlighting its existing pool of technology professionals, English proficiency, and adaptability. Investment promotion efforts include assisting prospective investors with government procedures and connecting startups with partners and financing. This support aims to mitigate common challenges for startups, such as a lack of guidance and difficulty securing funding, which often prevent them from advancing beyond initial stages.
The initiative is still in its developmental stages, with the companies working towards a consolidated business plan to determine the scope of collaboration, investment requirements, and potential employment generation. While agreements like memoranda of understanding are anticipated before the end of 2026, details such as the project's investment value, projected workforce, specific location, and implementation timeline have not yet been disclosed. This phased approach aims to ensure commercial viability before commitments are made.
