BYD to break 2026 overseas sales target after strong run in Brazil, Europe
BYD expects to exceed its 2026 overseas sales target, forecasting nearly two million units this year and 2.5 million for 2027. This revised guidance is 33% higher than the 1.5 million target set in June. Overseas shipments reached almost 800,000 vehicles by June, with monthly volumes projected at 180,000 to 200,000 units in the second half. The company noted shipping capacity constrained earlier sales. BYD generated RMB 20,000 (USD 2,980) profit per vehicle sold outside China in the first half.
BYD’s true challenge is not global sales volume but domestic profitability. Overseas sales offer a critical buffer, yielding RMB 20,000 per vehicle compared to less than RMB 3,000 domestically. This stark difference explains BYD’s aggressive push into markets like Brazil, Europe, and Indonesia, despite the upfront investment in localized production and carrier fleets. The company must sustain these overseas margins as domestic competition remains brutal.
The push into robotics and energy storage for AI data centers reflects BYD’s need to diversify beyond EVs. Stella Li’s claim of selling out energy storage capacity through 2027 points to a strong, but under-recognized, revenue stream. This strategy is crucial for BYD to offset intense price wars in China, where its market share shrank to 21.4% in the first seven months of the year, down 7.8 percentage points.
The thing to watch is BYD’s domestic market share recovery. Management aims for 25% but offers no timeline. Success hinges on advanced technologies like ultrafast charging and assisted driving, not price cuts. If BYD fails to regain share, its reliance on overseas markets and new ventures like robotics will only intensify. The move into robotics, including a potential humanoid robot release by Q3, is a long-term bet with uncertain immediate returns.
