Brands look stronger in AI answers when named than when left for AI to find: NeuroRank
Generative AI models are significantly more likely to include a brand in their answers when the brand name is part of the user's prompt, according to NeuroRank's AI Visibility Index 2026. The audit of 122 brands across nine sectors found a 38.4 percentage point difference in inclusion rates between named and unnamed prompts on major AI platforms.
The study highlights a distinction between brand recognition and brand discovery within AI interactions. When a prompt explicitly named an audited brand, high inclusion stood at 56.2% across 2,298 results. This dropped to 17.8% across 4,879 results when the prompt did not name the brand, indicating that AI responses often reflect existing user familiarity rather than independent brand recommendations.
This pattern persisted across different prompt categories. Shortlist and recommendation requests, which comprised 38.6% of the 7,580 unique prompts, named the audited brand in only 5.9% of instances. Conversely, comparison prompts named the brand 84.8% of the time. The report notes these are distinct prompt classes and not a controlled test, but the data shows how user query framing influences brand visibility in AI-generated content.
Brand visibility varied by sector and AI model. No sector reached 30% high inclusion on prompts without a brand name. BFSI led on named prompts at 73.4% and showed a 24.8% inclusion on unnamed prompts, the widest gap at 48.6 percentage points. Among 63 brands measured on all four models, the median difference between a brand's best and worst model performance was 33.3 percentage points, indicating inconsistent visibility across platforms for individual brands.
