Asia's claim to technological leadership is firmly anchored in its semiconductor manufacturing prowess. The region, including Japan, produces 72 percent of the world's semiconductors. Crucially, it manufactures 95 percent of the most advanced chips essential for AI accelerators, a fact that gives Asian economies significant leverage in the global AI race. This concentration of high-end chip production means that any major AI development worldwide is inherently reliant on Asian supply chains. The thing to watch is how this hardware dominance translates into software and AI model development within Asia. While the region controls the foundational components, sustained leadership requires parallel investment in AI research, talent development, and the creation of proprietary AI applications. Without this, Asia risks remaining primarily a manufacturing hub rather than a full-spectrum AI innovator.
