Alibaba Unveils Zhenwu V900 AI Chip in Direct Challenge to Nvidia
Alibaba unveiled its Zhenwu V900 AI accelerator, positioning it as a direct competitor to Nvidia. The company claims the chip can cluster up to 500,000 units for training frontier models. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu also announced plans to develop models with 5 trillion to 10 trillion parameters. This scale aims for more complex tasks, surpassing Alibaba's current Qwen 3.8-Max model with 2.4 trillion parameters.
Alibaba's Zhenwu V900 chip announcement reflects a broader push. It is a direct challenge to Nvidia's dominance in AI accelerators. Alibaba commits over $53 billion over three years to AI capabilities. This investment reflects China's push for domestic chip independence, especially as export controls tighten.
The push for 5 trillion to 10 trillion parameter models by Alibaba Cloud will drive demand for high-end compute. This creates opportunities for other Chinese hardware providers to support Alibaba's expanded data center capacity, targeted at 20 gigawatts by 2032. Citigroup forecasts this expansion could generate over $160 billion in revenue for Alibaba Cloud, solidifying its position in Asia's AI infrastructure.
The real test for Zhenwu V900 is widespread adoption beyond Alibaba's internal use. China needs a robust ecosystem of developers and enterprises building on domestic hardware. Without this, the chip remains an internal solution, not a market disruptor. Watch for third-party cloud service providers in China adopting Zhenwu V900 by late 2027.
