Alibaba sends AI ‘digital employees’ to work in rival apps from ByteDance, Tencent
Alibaba Cloud has launched an updated version of its QoderWake tool, enabling users to create AI-powered "digital employees" that can operate across major Chinese workplace communication platforms. These AI workers can function within Alibaba's DingTalk, ByteDance's Feishu, and Tencent's WeCom. Users can generate these digital employees with a single-line description of the required role, or choose from 10 ready-to-use roles such as product manager or data analyst. Since its initial release in April, QoderWake has deployed nearly 100,000 digital employees, executing approximately 2 million tasks over the past three months.
Alibaba's QoderWake tool, now capable of deploying AI digital employees into rival platforms like ByteDance's Feishu and Tencent's WeCom, marks a strategic shift in China's enterprise AI market. This move by Alibaba Cloud shows a willingness to break from the traditional "walled-garden" approach, where tech giants typically keep users within their own ecosystems. It reflects a broader pivot by Chinese tech companies to monetize their expensive AI models through business-facing applications that can handle complex workflows. The ability of QoderWake's digital workers to operate seamlessly across platforms, absorbing context from documents and chats, suggests a push towards interoperability in enterprise AI. This could drive greater adoption of AI tools within Chinese businesses, as companies are no longer locked into a single vendor's communication platform. The reported deployment of nearly 100,000 digital employees and 2 million tasks executed in three months indicates early traction for this cross-platform strategy.
