Adyen Rolls Out Visa Payment Passkey for Online Checkout
Adyen has rolled out Visa Payment Passkey through its Authenticate module, part of the AI-powered Adyen Uplift payment suite. Initially available in the UK, this integration allows eligible consumers to verify online purchases using their device’s existing unlock method, aiming to simplify checkout and strengthen fraud protection.
Adyen's integration of Visa Payment Passkey into its Authenticate module is designed to streamline the online checkout experience. By allowing cardholders to use their device's unlock method, such as a fingerprint or facial scan, for verification, the system aims to reduce the number of authentication steps needed for online payments. This approach is intended to make transactions faster and more intuitive for both new and returning customers.
The Authenticate module, which employs machine learning, determines when authentication is required and selects the most suitable method, now including Visa Payment Passkey. This integration means merchants can access new authentication technologies without needing to implement separate integrations for each, as Adyen manages the underlying complexity through a single platform.
Beyond convenience, the integration also seeks to bolster security against fraud and phishing attacks. Rahul Hampole, SVP Product for Payments at Adyen, states that embedding familiar device biometrics offers a seamless way for merchants to protect customers. Dan Sanford, SVP Global Product and Initiatives at Visa, notes the goal of reducing consumer friction while enhancing security and improving outcomes for merchants.
While the initial rollout is confined to the UK, Adyen plans further enhancements and a global expansion of the feature in 2027. This phased introduction suggests a deliberate approach to integrating advanced authentication methods within a unified payment platform.
