3,200 Engines in next 10 Years, One Aviation Revolution: GE Aerospace Bets Big on India
GE Aerospace expects to deliver over 3,200 engines to India in the next nine to ten years, anticipating that its engines or joint ventures will power approximately nine out of ten aircraft delivered during this period. The company released an economic impact report, "Powering Progress: GE Aerospace Economic Impact in India," to discuss the nation's aviation growth.
This report highlights India's aviation sector's shift towards focusing on indigenous manufacturing, component production, and engine maintenance, beyond merely increasing passenger traffic and infrastructure. GE Aerospace's four-decade presence in India, including its Bengaluru research center, which has contributed to advanced engine research and generated around 1,000 patents, positions it as a key partner in this transformation.
The projection of more than 3,200 engine deliveries underscores the substantial expansion of India's commercial aircraft fleet. This demand creates specific opportunities for developing local aerospace manufacturing and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. Such developments align with India's broader economic goals of becoming Viksit Bharat by 2047, by fostering a more self-reliant aviation industry.
GE Aerospace's involvement spans both commercial and defense aerospace in India, including fighter aircraft engine programs and manufacturing partnerships. This comprehensive engagement suggests the company views India as a strategic partner for both aviation and manufacturing. The company's stated intent to expand its sourcing and supply-chain activities within India could further integrate local firms into the global aerospace value chain.
