vivo x Kolder Creative: New Smartphone Filmmaking Masterclass Featuring vivo X500 Pro Max
Kolder Creative, in collaboration with vivo, has released a ten-video smartphone filmmaking masterclass featuring the newly launched vivo X500 Pro Max. The course, led by filmmaker Sam Kolder, demonstrates the device's imaging capabilities and Kolder's creative process for cinematic storytelling.
The masterclass, featuring the vivo X500 Pro Max, is presented as a practical filmmaking education tool, building on vivo's existing partnership with filmmaker Sam Kolder. This initiative aims to position smartphones as a viable primary tool for creative expression, rather than a secondary option for professional filmmaking, according to Yu Meng, Vice President and Head of Imaging at vivo.
The vivo X500 Series, co-engineered with ZEISS, integrates an advanced ZEISS Telephoto Lens System and cinematic video capabilities. The masterclass specifically demonstrates how the X500 Pro Max's features contribute to cinematic quality, covering native camera controls, composition, footage selection, editing, sound design, color grading, and export.
Filmmaker Sam Kolder details how technical choices support storytelling, including the use of Log recording for enhanced color grading flexibility, and neutral-density (ND) filters for exposure control. He also explains how frame rate and shutter settings influence motion appearance, and explores composition within the vertical 9:16 frame, using various shot types to build cohesive sequences. Kolder asserts that current smartphone technology can achieve results that previously required extensive professional gear.
