UOB Names Tan Choon Hin Head of ASEAN and Greater China
United Overseas Bank (UOB) has appointed Tan Choon Hin as its new Head of ASEAN and Greater China, a strategic move effective September 1, 2026. This senior role aims to bolster UOB's efforts in capturing the increasing trade, investment, and wealth flows between these two crucial regions, aligning with its ambition to become the leading bank in ASEAN. Tan will oversee UOB's regional business across seven key markets, including its subsidiaries in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and mainland China, as well as branches in Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan. His mandate includes strengthening collaboration with country CEOs, accelerating cross-border revenue opportunities, and supporting the bank's long-term growth trajectory. Tan will also supervise UOB’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Advisory unit, which has recently facilitated over 300 expansion plans valued at a projected S$5.6 billion.
This executive appointment at UOB signals a clear strategic focus on deepening its presence and capitalizing on the robust economic integration between ASEAN and Greater China. Tan Choon Hin's extensive experience across both regions, particularly in leadership roles like CEO of UOB Thailand, positions him to drive significant cross-border revenue opportunities. This move reflects a broader trend among major financial institutions in Asia to enhance their regional connectivity and leverage the growing FDI into ASEAN, which continues to be a magnet for international capital and business expansion. The emphasis on strengthening collaboration with country CEOs and overseeing the FDI Advisory unit underscores UOB's commitment to facilitating seamless business expansion for its clients across these dynamic markets.
The appointment also highlights the increasing importance of integrated regional strategies for banks operating in Asia. As trade and investment flows intensify, having a unified leadership structure for key growth corridors like ASEAN and Greater China becomes critical for competitive advantage. Tan's role will be instrumental in aligning UOB's diverse operations to support these flows, potentially setting a precedent for how other regional banks structure their leadership to maximize cross-border synergies. This strategic alignment is crucial for navigating the complexities and capturing the opportunities presented by Asia's evolving economic landscape.
