Uber invests $10M in Indian fleet operator Carrum at $168M valuation
Uber has invested $10 million in Indian fleet management startup Carrum Mobility in a Series B round, increasing its reliance on large fleet operators in India. This new investment values Carrum at approximately $168 million post-money, up from $63 million after Uber's initial $7 million investment in January. Carrum, founded by Karan Jain, now operates about 5,100 vehicles across six Indian cities and has onboarded over 18,000 drivers. The startup provides vehicles for Uber Go, Premier, and Uber Black, with 20% of its fleet serving the premium Black tier, for which Carrum is Uber's largest partner in India. Carrum generated annualized revenue of about $45 million.
Uber's $10 million investment in Carrum Mobility, an Indian fleet operator, points to a strategic shift in how ride-hailing giants secure vehicle supply in Asia. Carrum, now valued at $168 million, is crucial for Uber's premium Black service in India, which operates exclusively through fleet partners. This model allows for tighter control over vehicle and driver standards, a key factor for high-end offerings. Carrum plans to more than double its fleet to 11,000 vehicles within the next 12 months, expanding its reach and strengthening its technology platform. The company's profitability and Uber's backing have already reduced its borrowing costs by 40%. Our view is that this move reflects Uber's broader strategy to outsource fleet management, potentially reducing its operational overhead while ensuring service quality. The ambition for Carrum to become a global fleet partner for Uber suggests a scalable model that could be replicated in other markets. However, the reliance on a single major partner like Carrum, while efficient, could also introduce concentration risks if Carrum were to face operational challenges or decide to expand services to rivals, though it currently has no such intention.
