Thailand teams up with South Korean agencies to work on AI and protect copyrights
Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) met with four major South Korean copyright agencies in Seoul. The talks focused on enhancing cooperation in AI, copyright enforcement, and rights management. This initiative aims to support creators and bolster Thailand's digital economy. The discussions reflect a growing regional focus on intellectual property in the age of generative AI.
Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property is not just talking about AI; it is acting on copyright enforcement. The move to engage South Korean agencies like the Korea Copyright Commission shows a practical approach. Many Asian regulators are still discussing AI policy in abstract terms. Thailand is moving directly to the implementation phase, focusing on creator protection.
This partnership benefits Thai creators directly by offering better tools for rights management. It also provides a framework for South Korean agencies to extend their influence in Southeast Asia. The test for Thailand will be how quickly these discussions translate into concrete legal frameworks and enforcement actions. Mere MOUs often fail to deliver tangible results on the ground.
The thing to watch is whether this cooperation leads to a shared regional standard for AI copyright. If Thailand and South Korea establish a robust bilateral framework, it could pressure other ASEAN nations to follow suit. This would create a more unified approach to AI governance across Asia, moving beyond fragmented national policies.
