Tencent rolls out payment app for foreign travellers ahead of Apec summit
Tencent has launched TenPayGo, a mobile payment app for international visitors to China. The app allows overseas users to link foreign credit cards and digital wallets to the WeChat Pay network. This enables payments at tens of millions of merchants across China. TenPayGo supports seven international card networks, including Visa and Mastercard, and about 60 overseas digital wallets. Registration only requires an email address, simplifying access for travellers ahead of the Apec summit in Shenzhen.
Tencent’s TenPayGo launch serves a purpose beyond tourism. It addresses a critical friction point for China’s digital economy: foreign access. Requiring only an email for registration, TenPayGo bypasses the local phone number hurdle that has long frustrated international visitors. This move targets the practical integration of foreign payment systems into China’s dominant mobile payment infrastructure, which is a structural shift.
This initiative directly benefits China’s inbound tourism sector and its broader economic re-engagement. Singapore’s Starryblu is among the first 60 overseas digital wallet partners, reflecting a clear focus on Southeast Asian markets. The app could accelerate payment adoption for travellers from these regions, boosting local consumption and making China a more accessible destination for regional business and leisure visitors.
The real test for TenPayGo will be its adoption rate beyond major cities and its long-term interoperability with other domestic payment giants. Watch whether Alibaba’s Alipay responds with a similar streamlined offering. Broader adoption depends on seamless integration with smaller merchants and sustained support for new international payment methods beyond the initial 60 partners.
