Shokz China CEO Yang Yun: “A company can’t stay in its comfort zone forever”
Shokz, a Chinese open-ear audio company, is expanding its product portfolio beyond bone conduction headphones and professional sports. The company launched OpenFit, its first ear-hook open-ear headphones, in 2023, targeting a broader consumer market including commuters and office users. In 2025, Shokz introduced OpenDots One, its first clip-on earbuds, further pushing into the mainstream. This expansion coincides with significant growth in China's open-ear headphone market, which saw shipments rise 20.2% in 2025, with clip-on earbuds growing 51%. Shokz is also venturing into AI-enabled audio, releasing OpenFit 2 AI in August with recording, transcription, and translation features for business users.
Shokz's pivot from niche bone conduction headphones to a broader open-ear audio brand, including AI-enabled products, reflects a strategic response to China's rapidly expanding open-ear headphone market. The company's CEO, Yang Yun, emphasizes a system-level capability spanning materials, ergonomics, and acoustics as its differentiator against new competitors, including smartphone makers. This move into AI with OpenFit 2 AI, offering recording and translation, targets business users and expands Shokz's addressable market beyond its traditional sports base. The thing to watch is how Shokz maintains its premium brand perception while competing with larger, more diversified tech companies. Its investment in proprietary silicone manufacturing and extensive ear data collection points to a focus on user comfort and product quality. However, the challenge lies in effectively communicating these advantages to a wider audience that may not associate Shokz with everyday use or advanced AI features, especially as the market fragments around task-specific audio tools.
