Sea x OpenAI Regional Codex Hackathon Series Comes To Malaysia On 5 December, US$50,000 API Credits Up For Grabs
Sea and OpenAI are bringing their Regional Codex Hackathon Series to Malaysia, with the Kuala Lumpur event scheduled for December 5, 2026. This one-day hackathon will challenge up to 40 teams to develop AI solutions using OpenAI’s Codex and frontier models like GPT-6 Astra, with US$50,000 in OpenAI API credits available as prizes.
The hackathon series extends Sea's internal adoption of Codex, aiming to broaden access and guidance to the wider developer community. By providing participants with access to advanced models, including GPT-6 Astra, the initiative offers practical exposure to current AI development tools. This approach could foster skill development among local developers and startups.
The event's format, challenging teams to solve "Unmet Needs with AI" and offering mentorship from Sea and OpenAI experts, emphasizes practical application. The prize structure, focused on OpenAI API credits, directly supports future AI development by participants, rather than providing cash. This aligns the incentive with continued engagement with OpenAI's platform.
The Kuala Lumpur event is part of a larger regional series, with previous editions in Singapore and Taiwan, and future stops planned for Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. This regional rollout suggests a coordinated effort to cultivate an AI developer base across Southeast Asia. The focus on practical problem-solving with specific AI tools could help identify localized applications for these technologies.
