SBS Transit turns to AI to tackle bus bunching, delays
SBS Transit is trialing an AI-powered tool named FlowOS to manage bus delays and bunching in Singapore. The system aims to improve service reliability by assisting service controllers who oversee up to 70 buses at a time. FlowOS analyzes live operations, flags issues, and recommends interventions to maintain even spacing between buses. This technology is currently being tested on Services 70 and 145, following a Memorandum of Understanding with UK-based Prospective Labs.
The core story is not AI replacing human jobs. SBS Transit emphasizes FlowOS acts as a 'brilliant assistant' for its senior service controllers. This reflects a broader trend in Asia where AI augments existing workflows rather than fully automating complex operational roles. It avoids the public backlash often associated with job displacement, particularly in public services.
Singapore's adoption of FlowOS, already deployed by Metroline in the UK, positions it as an early adopter of AI in public transport optimization within Southeast Asia. This trial offers a blueprint for other regional cities grappling with similar urban transit challenges. The success of Services 70 and 145 will influence broader implementation across SBS Transit's network and potentially inspire similar initiatives in Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok.
The thing to watch is the quantifiable impact on commuter wait times and service regularity. Specific metrics on improved bus spacing or reduced delays for Services 70 and 145 will be crucial. Without clear data, the initiative risks being perceived as a technology showcase rather than a practical solution to a persistent urban problem.
