Precision healthcare could be Taiwan’s strength
Taiwan aims to become a global hub for precision health, leveraging its strengths in biotechnology and information and communications technology. This initiative was highlighted by Wong Chi-huey, a professor at Scripps Research, during the Bio Taiwan Committee meeting in Taipei. The strategy involves integrating National Health Insurance (NHI) data with human biobank and genomic information into AI learning platforms, developing biomedical chips, and cultivating talent in biomedicine and AI. Premier Cho Jung-tai noted that Taiwan's biotech industry attracted NT$55.08 billion (US$1.73 billion) in investment last year, generating NT$805 billion in revenue. The government plans to revise policies and invest NT$10 billion over 10 years to support the sector, aiming to expand AI applications in healthcare and foster international cooperation.
Taiwan's push into precision healthcare, driven by AI and its robust semiconductor industry, represents a significant strategic pivot. The plan, articulated by Wong Chi-huey, focuses on integrating National Health Insurance data with genomic information to create a powerful AI learning platform. This move could position Taiwan as a leader in an aging global economy where medical spending is projected to reach US$15 trillion by 2030, up from US$10.6 trillion in 2018. The real challenge for Taiwan will be the execution of its four priorities: data integration, technological development, talent cultivation, and international cooperation. While the government's commitment, including a NT$10 billion investment program and the Ten AI Initiatives Promotion Plan, is substantial, the success hinges on effective implementation and overcoming potential data privacy concerns. The goal is to build a "smart biotech national team" that combines Taiwan's hardware prowess with its healthcare sector, but the global competition for AI and biotech talent remains fierce. For Asia, this initiative could establish a new benchmark for national healthcare innovation, particularly in how AI and big data are applied to public health systems. The focus on prevention and precision health could yield models applicable across other aging Asian economies. However, the window for Taiwan to solidify its position in advanced robotics supply chains, particularly outside China, is described as a "golden but narrowing" three-to-five-year period, suggesting urgency in these efforts.
