PingPong Taps ClearBank to Expand UK Payments Business
PingPong, a fintech founded in New York and headquartered in Hangzhou, China, has partnered with ClearBank to expand its UK payment services. After securing an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license from the FCA in 2023, PingPong aims to offer modern UK payment options, including real-time processing and virtual accounts, to its e-commerce and enterprise clients globally.
PingPong's approach in the UK addresses the complexities of cross-border payments, such as fragmented infrastructure. By partnering with ClearBank for agency banking, PingPong can offer its customers direct access to UK payment schemes, including Faster Payment System (FPS), CHAPS, and Bacs. This arrangement allows PingPong to provide a more integrated service without incurring the operational costs and complexities associated with becoming a direct participant in these schemes.
A core element of this collaboration is ClearBank's Virtual GBP accounts. This technology enables PingPong to issue virtual International Bank Account Numbers (vIBANs) under its own branding and sort code to individual customers. This structure allows PingPong to manage many customers efficiently through a smaller number of real accounts, which can reduce administrative burden and improve clarity on fund allocation for each client.
The partnership also enhances payment security and reliability. ClearBank's Confirmation of Payee (CoP) service for FPS provides real-time verification of payee details, adding a layer of security to help reduce fraud and misdirected payments. This capability supports PingPong's focus on risk and compliance, offering its enterprise customers in particular the assurance of secure and predictable payment processing, which is crucial for informed business decisions.
