PewDiePie’s OpenAI controversy takes a new turn with his “less restricted” Ajax AI
PewDiePie has introduced Ajax, a compact AI model built on Alibaba’s Qwen3.5-9B, designed for local operation within his self-hosted Odysseus workspace. The project follows his claim that OpenAI suspended his account twice during development, citing “distillation” in one instance, as he sought to use larger AI outputs for training his smaller model.
Ajax represents a move towards smaller, locally run AI models, diverging from the industry's focus on large cloud-based systems. By building on Alibaba’s Qwen3.5-9B, which has around nine billion parameters, the project aims to handle everyday tasks like web searches and emails closer to the user's hardware, potentially offering more data control and reducing reliance on external servers.
The project's development has been marked by controversy, with PewDiePie alleging OpenAI account suspensions during a process known as knowledge distillation. While OpenAI permits distillation in some contexts, it restricts using its output to develop competing models. The displayed email citing "distillation" highlights a tension between open AI development practices and commercial terms of service.
Despite its stated goals of local control and a "less restricted" user experience, Ajax is not yet a finished product. Key information such as final hardware requirements, independent benchmark results, and downloadable model weights remain unreleased, with the website still listing the model as "Coming soon." This indicates that the practical implications of its design choices and safety claims are yet to be independently verified.
